Background

Køge has an ideal location in relation to logistics. It has a busy harbour, a rail line, and a motorway network with connections running west, south and north, with Copenhagen and a link to Sweden only 40 km away.

Køge also has a long history as an industrial town. Over the years, the municipality has housed a number of the heavyweights of Danish industry, and it is therefore a natural development to establish the Scandinavian Transport Centre and begin expansion of Port of Køge at the same time.

The Greater Copenhagen region has a great need to dispose of contaminated soil, as existing landfill sites are full. This expansion will allow for the disposal of 2 million cubic metres of soil.

The project allows Køge Municipality and Port of Køge to help meet the landfill requirements of the Greater Copenhagen region, promote the development surrounding Køge Harbour, and also improve recreational facilities by expanding Køge Marina and extending the beach areas north and south of Køge Harbour.
